Heating Fuel - All Rural Bush Village Parishes

Here in Fairbanks, we are already preparing for next winter as we place the heating fuel orders for our mission sites along the Yukon River and the Kuskokwim River.

In the remote village locations where fuel will be barged in this summer, the heating oil can cost as much as $8.25 per gallon!  Even though we are seeing lower prices around the country, these exorbitant prices will remain.

Thirty-seven (37) rural and remote parishes throughout the missionary Diocese of Fairbanks have relied upon subsidies for many years just for basic ministries and to keep the church and parish houses warm.  The high cost of fuel again this summer is a difficult blow to their budgets that are overstretched. Any assistance you may provide for heating oil at this time would be greatly appreciated.  May God's peace and joy bless you and keep you warm throughout this winter.

Catholic Bibles for Distribution

For Remote Village Parishes

In the past, we have been blessed to receive adequate supplies of Catholic Bibles to distribute throughout the Diocese.  However, we are not currently receiving any more Bibles and do not have the extra funds to purchase additional ones.  We would like to purchase the Good News Translation (GNT) Bible which is an "easy-to-read, easy-to-understand accurate translation. It carries the official Catholic imprimatur as well as the Deuterocanonical and Apocryphal Books. Reader's aids include: section headers, footnotes, book summaries and word lists. Ideal for outreach and sold in case-lots only."  Each case currently costs $51.60 including shipping to Alaska.  If you would like to help distribute Catholic Bibles to the far reaches of Alaska, we would appreciate your donation.

Updated - April 22, 2009

We would like to extend a very gracious and sincere thank you to all of the generous donors, including our regular Alaskan Shepherd donors, who have made donations to purchase almost 150 cases of bibles for distribution.  May God bless you all for your kindness and generosity, and for assisting in spreading the Good News.

Joyful Sounds

For Remote Village Parishes

Pat Tam is the Director for the Adult Faith Formation Program in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta area on the far reaches of the western coast of Alaska.  They have been singing traditional Eskimo (Yup'ik) hymns for many years, but are starting to sing some of the wonderful music published by the Oregon Catholic Press.  Pat would like to get a set of 16 CD's of hymns and service music ("Today's Music for Today's Church") for each of the 24 parishes where he assists with adult faith formation.  He would appreciate it if you would please consider purchasing a set for one of the parishes at a cost of $130 to help them increase their music repertoire from Toksook Bay all the way up to Unalakleet.

Heavy duty cargo sled - St. Marys

Norbert Beans is the Coordinator for Facilities Upgrades and Maintenance for 24 village parishes in the Yukon-Kuskokwim area located on the farthest western coast of Alaska.  There are no roads that connect the remote villages, so in the winter, snow machines pulling cargo sleds are among the most economic ways to travel between them.  Norbert needs a heavy duty sled which will be used for hauling tools and equipment when he travels from St. Marys to other remote villages like Kotlik which is 70 air miles to the north, Chevak, 85 air miles to the SW or Marshall, 40 air miles to the SE.  Although it can be extremely cold and dangerous, traveling by snow machine saves both the air travel costs and the just-as-expensive excess baggage costs for the tools.  The heavy duty cargo sled will allow Norbert to travel with the tools he needs for maintenance and facilities upgrade work in the wintertime for other village parishes.  The Plaschem 8-foot Seal Hunter Sled is ideal for the job, as it has 18.5" high side walls and is Alaskan made, specifically for remote travel.  Please consider making a contribution toward this sled as part of your Christmas giving this year.  May God bless you for your prayers, kindness and generosity.

Aniak - Saint Theresa Parish

4 Wheeler ATV (All Terrain Vehicle)

Sister Marian Leaf, OSF and Father Stan Jaszek, a Polish priest, take turns ministering in Aniak, Alaska, a Yup'ik Eskimo remote village located on the south bank of the Kuskokwim River in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta in the interior of the State. The Saint Theresa parish needs a new 4-wheeler ATV as the existing one is over 20 years old. It is the only form of transportation in the summer for Sister Marian and Father Stan. The village is spread out, with the new housing being about 2 miles away for parishioner visiting purposes. They would appreciate your assistance to help replace the older ATV with a newer and more reliable one for their visits to parishioners and the sick. The cost including shipping to Aniak will be approximately $7,500.

A very gracious thank you to the Catholic Extension donors who have made a gift of $2,000 and for other individual donors who have donated another $1,250 towards the purchase of the 4-wheeler. Living Room Window

At the Aniak parish, the seal on the upstairs living room window is in bad shape and the cold, frigid air is coming through. Although the existing window is double pane, the seal between the two glass windows does not work any longer either. A new energy efficient window would not only keep out the cold arctic air, but would reduce heating costs as well. Sr. Marian usually has to scrape frost off the inside window and she says that there is so much fog in between the two panes that one can barely see out. The window is approximately 42 inches by 36 inches.  The new energy efficient window with a 50 year warranty and made in Fairbanks, Alaska for the cold climates would cost approximately $500 plus $150 for shipping. 13 gifts of $50 would let the light shine into Sr. Marian's residence in Aniak and keep her warmer.

Holy Cross - Holy Cross Church

Heating Oil Pump

At the parish in Holy Cross, located 279 miles upriver on the Yukon River, a large heating oil tank is used for bulk storage. This large bulk tank allows the parish to buy larger quantities of heating oil when the price is better.   The parish needs some parts to connect the large tank to the smaller tank feeding the heaters in the church and residence. Currently, a manual pump is used to transfer heating oil from one tank to the other when the smaller one is empty. In an effort to help prevent the church and residence from freezing by keeping a steady flow of heating oil to the smaller tank, about $1300 of equipment and parts are needed to do this job.  Thirteen gifts of $100 would make this a reality for the parish.  Please consider this option in your charitable giving plan.

Hooper Bay is a Central Yup'ik Eskimo village on the Bering Sea Coast in western Alaska.  For the past several years, many have noticed that the flooring in the church is in need of replacement.  The tile project is now finished and Fr. Gregg let us know that the floor looks beautiful.  Bishop Kettler recently confirmed 4 at the first Mass in the church after the project was finished.  The cost of the project was greater than anticipated or budgeted, which was $3,500 for materials and $1,060 for labor.  In fact, materials cost a little over $6,300 and paid labor for the project amounted to about $1,400.  The parish was also gifted donated labor by a local organization that amounted to $1,600.  This is the first replacement of flooring since the church was built in the early 1970s.    The parish would appreciate your help to cover some of the expenses incurred in this much needed flooring repair.  Thank you for your consideration of this request and our sincere gratitude to those who have helped to date on the project.

This will not only help reduce the cost of electricity, but will help to prevent freeze-up of the water system in future winters.

Scammon Bay, Hooper Bay and Chevak - Blessed Sacrament, Little Flower of Jesus and Sacred Heart

VHF Radios and Antennae

In the remote bush villages of western Alaska, the VHF radio is the main public means of information and announcement. Some villages have other means like a radio station or an information channel on TV. However, many villages do not have radio or TV and rely on VHF. Blessed Sacrament parish in Scammon Bay, Little Flower of Jesus parish in Hooper Bay and Sacred Heart parish in Chevak do not have VHF radios to make announcements such as for worship times, catechism, adult faith sharing or other occasions. Presently, Father Gregg Wood, SJ has a hand held unit that he carries and that needs constant recharging. But when he is gone from the village, other visitors to the parish, priests and sisters are without VHF radio communication with the rest of the village. Having a base unit for each parish would enhance the communication of ministers with the people of the parish who live in the village. A power supply, transceiver and appropriate antenna would cost approximately $620 for each of the three parishes. We would appreciate your assistance to provide better communications in these village parishes.

Date Requested by Parish - January 5, 2007 original request; updated 4/18/07

We would like to extend a very gracious thank you to the donor who sent a generous gift to purchase all three VHF radios and antennae. May the blessings of the Easter season be with you throughout the year. Father Gregg Wood, SJ says "Much of the communication regarding events in the community occurs over the VHF radio. Having a "base station" radio set will allow the radio to be on through the day. It has always been important to me to be aware of what is happening in the village during my parish visit. This kind of equipment will be a great help to doing that.... thank you very much for your assistance in our need to upgrade our communication equipment."
