Bishop's 2010 Advent Message

TravelingMy Dear Brothers and Sisters,

"Stay awake" our Lord tells us in the gospel reading for the first Sunday in Advent. He says we do not know the time of his return and so we must always be ready.

Staying awake isn't always easy, especially at this time of year when the light melts away so quickly. I often want to doze in the afternoon twilight or on a snowy weekend morning. That's to be expected as Winter grows deeper.

However, staying awake is very important advice. Are we awake to our neighbor's problems? Are we alert to our own family's needs? Are we aware of our Lord's call to follow him?

When we are awake, alert and aware, we are in a better position to help those in need, give love to those who sorrow, and surrender ourselves to God's message.

Please join me this Advent in trying to stay awake for our Lord. We do not know when He will return, but we can do a lot to prepare.

May God bless us all.
