Haitian Relief Effort

January 14, 2010
Diocese of Fairbanks

Bishop Kettler joins people across and around the world in expressing his concern and offering prayers for victims of the terrible earthquake that struck Haiti earlier this week. The death toll is expected to exceed 100,000, with thousands more homeless and injured.  In response the Bishop has asked the chancery to work with Catholic Relief Services to funnel donations and collections for those afflicted from the quake.

Two Ways to Give
According to the press release from CRS dated January 13, 2010:

"Catholic Relief Services is readying food and other aid to help families affected by a powerful earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12. CRS has committed an initial $5 million to help survivors of the devastating quake.

"CRS has worked in Haiti, the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, for over 50 years. The country is still rebuilding from the 2008 hurricanes that left the city of buried in 3.2 million cubic yards of mud."

Catholic Relief Services is the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States. The agency provides assistance to people in more than 100 countries and territories based on need, regardless of race, nationality or creed. Please pray for those harmed, homeless and suffering from this devastating natural disaster.
